If I want to consider adoption, where do I start?
If you choose to make an adoption plan for your child, we can offer you a complete range of services to help you throughout your pregnancy and for the months that follow. The process begins with you. You can tell us the characteristics you are looking for in an adoptive family. We will share profiles of families who meet those characteristics. The profiles will have photos of the family and a letter they have written telling you about themselves. You can choose the degree of openness you want in your adoption plan.
Is there a cost for services?
No, there is no charge for our services. Wyoming and Colorado Children’s Society can help you with rent, transportation, food, and medical costs.
Does support stop once I deliver the baby and follow through with adoption?
No. Wyoming and Colorado Children’s Society staff is available to you for as long as you need. Several years may pass and you may find yourself needing to reconnect with our agency. Please know that we are always available to you. Our goal is that you feel empowered by your adoption decision and can pursue the goals and dreams you identified during your pregnancy. We are here to help you feel successful in your life.
Is this my decision alone?
Whenever possible we want to include the father of the baby in the decision to make an adoption plan. However, there are times this is simply not possible. We will talk about the birth father of your baby and how to involve him in the planning.
Do I have to go to court?
Wyoming laws are very simple and permit birth parents to voluntarily relinquish their parental rights to allow adoption without going to court. We will explain the legal process to you so you fully understand your rights. Under certain circumstances, Colorado law may require to appear in court after relinquishment.
Do I have to tell anyone of my decision?
No, you do not have to tell anyone of your decision to make an adoption plan. However, it is always wise to have the support and concern of people you love and who love you.
Can I choose my baby’s family?
Absolutely! It is often the best feeling to know you have carefully selected a family who will parent your child. You can decide how involved you want the adoptive family to be with your pregnancy and birthing process. You may want to have the family present at the birth of the baby, or perhaps you would like them to be waiting in the hospital.
Some of our waiting families’ profiles are on our website. Click here if you would like to view them.
Can I write a letter to my baby explaining my decision?
Many birth parents write a letter to their baby explaining their decision and the love they feel for them. This is truly a keepsake and will be treasured by the adoptive family until the child is old enough to have it. Birth parents and their families often like to send gifts to the child and the adoptive family will treasure these gifts as well.
Can I hold my baby and spend time alone, even if I have made an adoption plan?
Yes, you certainly can hold your baby and spend as much time as you would like together. Adoption is a thoughtful plan and it shows your love for your baby.
